Practical tips to keep cats and dogs cool and safe during the hot Kuwait summer.
Kuwait summers are among the hottest in the world, and pets feel the heat too. These simple habits help keep your cat or dog comfortable and safe. This is general advice; talk to your vet if you are worried about your pet.
Water and shade
- Always keep fresh, cool water available, indoors and out.
- Never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
- Provide shade and keep pets indoors in an air-conditioned room during the hottest hours.
Walks
- Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening.
- Hot pavement and sand can burn paws. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.
Coat care
A clean, brushed coat is more comfortable than a matted one. Regular grooming removes dirt and loose hair, and a haircut can help thick-coated pets. Ask your groomer what suits your pet's coat before cutting it very short.
Signs of heat stress
Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting or collapse can mean heat stress. Move your pet to a cool place, offer small amounts of water and contact a vet straight away.
